I went to the ER and the verdict is...

Woe is Me
Hey all!

So, by now some of you already know that I have been at home sick for some time now. I don’t have health insurance and it seemed like I just had a common cold, so I didn’t go to the doctor’s. While I felt as if I were getting better (my voice came back much to the chagrin of others), I was still having sleepless nights and coughing up phlegm in a shade of green that doesn’t compliment my skin tone (tmi?). I consulted my dear friend Google, who’s a big fat “know it all”, and was informed that the shade of phlegm bestowed upon my tissues meant I had an infection. So, the next morning I hauled my bootie over to the emergency room hoping that I’d have a simple diagnosis of say, I don’t know, bronchitis, get given some antibiotics and be told that I’m clear to get my broke a$$ back to work the following day.

I had a great time at the ER I’ll admit, I didn’t want to leave. Aside from the constant coughing that had the 5 year old behind the curtain in the "room" next to me being more concerned about me dying as opposed to her mother’s car accident (so sweet,“Hey, are you okay in there Miss?”), I’d say I was all smiles, bursting with stars and sugarplums, and confident that I’d have medication and clearance to go back to normal living by the next day. I even thought I’d be better by 7:15 that evening to take a dance class I prepaid for (you know, because the magic cough medicine that I imagined they would give me would be that effective!). Well, the doctor’s attending me pissed in my cheerios when they came in with the news. They were so sweet, funny and smiley faced. So much, that when they told me I had pneumonia I laughed and said “Really, so even with that phlegm and coughing there’s nothing wrong with…wait, what?” So that’s why I felt like I ran a marathon each time I went down stairs to get something to eat and stock up on bedside fluids?

Then the nurse came in, bearer of worse news. Discharge paper in hands, she says something about me (remember, broke and no health insurance) needing to go to a doctor in 5 days for a follow up and then I ask her:

Me: “So, when can I go back to work?”
The nurse gives me a blank stare.
Me: “Tomorrow? Day after? It takes like 24 hours for antibiotics to kick in, right?”
Insert 5 seconds of silence that painstakingly feels like 5 minutes.
Nurse: “Girl...you got pneumonia what do you mean when can you go back to work? People die from this, you got an infection in your lungs, you need to stay in bed for like 10 days.”

First of all, whoooooa mama. Second of all, 10 days?!?! I don’t get paid when I don’t go to work! I can’t stay in bed, who’s going to feed me?! Will I ever get better? 10 days?! Yes, 10 days. Maybe a little less, but still, what am I going to do, like, financially?

So, when can I go back to work again? Photo compliments of Zazzle.com

The stress over this little very big detail which looms over my head definitely isn’t conducive to the recovery process, so I need to try and let it go for now, but I can’t help but wonder why, at one of the few times in my life that I don’t have sick days or health insurance, would this happen? I’ve already made a few moves such as post a few easy things on Ebay and call my local Avon Representative to inquire about becoming a salesperson too. I mean, it's about all I can do for now to try and make money from bed and I’m even somewhat limited on the Ebay thing since I can’t walk around too much before I start having a cough attack.

I also need to find a way to keep productive and since I don’t have a TV in my room I’ve been wasting away online and I’m kind of bored of it. So, I thought, now is a better time than ever to focus on sharing with you all the issues I’ve had with my health and what I have learned about my conditions and ailments. I promised to do so in the past, but I get more excited about writing about the exciting people and food in my life. Since I am sick  and not at my best,  now is the time to write a little less about the totally awesome people and artists and food in my life since I most likely will not be writing at my best while my mind is all on my health. However, before I got really sick, I pulled together a photo album of some of my favorite works by one of my absolute favorite artists, Derek Santiago, and only haven’t posted because I promised to take a picture of an awesome book I bought from him to post on FB. Oh, yeah, and I have to write something too! The pics of me and the book will have to come later, but I can’t wait any longer to share my love of Derek Santiago’s work with you all! There will be plenty of time in the future for me to get all dolled up and look cute posing with Derek’s artwork, which will house the words I pen for my long lost love of writing poetry. Perhaps, I can do it for a Circle of Art Movement photo shoot and article.

Soooo, back on topic, now more than ever I realize how precious our health is, priceless actually. Our health is our wealth so take care of yourself! Pause. Ok, so I have prolactinoma. Prolactinowhat? Yup, prolactinoma. I’m not going to tell you all about it now, it will be the topic of conversation in tomorrow’s post so you’re not reading an essay today, but I’ll leave you with this: I at times easily overlook it. We should never overlook not one single detail of our health, no matter how mundane it seems, it can be linked to or contribute to greater issues with something else. When I checked into the hospital and they asked me if I had any health conditions I immediately said “no” and then followed by and “Oh yeah, I’m not sure if this is relevant but I have prolactinoma.” Prolactiwhat? Yeah, that’s usually the response I get. Anyway, I hope the information I type up while I’m home with pneumonia is of some interest to you and helpful for some and that I am able to be interesting enough to keep you engaged long enough to learn something new based on my experiences.

Well, for today, that’s all folks! Hope to see you here tomorrow!

Help others by Treating Yourself with "Butterfly" Nail Laquer

It doesn't take getting something in return in order for me to give, and I'll add that it shouldn't for anyone, however, I especially love it when a product I purchase gives back. Sometimes, I even buy things I don't need because they are being sold for charity and just save them as gifts for people I know would enjoy them.

A few weeks ago while writing a blarticle on Fab Chick by Harlem Diamond, I came across nail laquer "Butterfly" and discovered that with every purchase of the $8 polish, $2 will go to Lupas Foundation of America. I already loved this indie cosmetic line that sells nail polishes, lip gloss and lip stick with consumer's health in mind, but discovering the generous and charitable heart of founder Grace Williams made me love it even more.

You can support Lupas Foundation of America and a phenomanal small business with your purchase of Butterfly here. To learn more about Fab Chick by Harlem Diamond and their products, please click here. You'll be led to their site of DBP, Formaldehyde and Toluene free polishes and Vitamin E and Green Tea Extract enriched lip products free of parabens.

Please check out the highlighted links and thank you for reading my lovelies!

Yum Shaker Recipe Share I: Healthy-ish Cocktail?

The Amazing Six photo from Vital Juice
My bartendress friend handed me over the sad facts about my favorite margarita: each glass of the antioxidant rich pomegranate margarita, made with POM, is approximately 800 calories. If I indulged in my hero of margaritas regularly, I'd be in serious trouble, and I am not giving up chocolate for ANYTHING (except a life or death situation, I am somewhat rational after all). Therefore, I need to save calories when it comes to other treats and 800 calories a day is not worth disinfecting my intestines for (joke).

A few weeks ago, Vital Juice posted 5 yummy Skinny Summer Cocktails at just about, get this, 200 calories each! Less than 200 calories! And don't let the name Summer Cocktail sway you away, we still have a good month left and these sound delish enough to try any time of year!

My drink to try, Freckled Kiwi, photo from Vital Juice
The recipes, provided by the mixologist Gods and Goddesses of Trestle on Tenth in NYC, will certainly satisfy the palette of lovers of  cucumber with Pimms' Cup, kiwi with Freckled Kiwi , celery with Stalking the Celery, rhubarb with Rhubarb Wrangle,  and carrots and ginger with 20/20 Cocktail (imagine telling your opthamologist at your next eye exam that it's all thanks to a cocktail! ). Just click on the names to be led to the recipe and become a bartending sensation at your next gathering ;) I'm a rum girl, and coincidentally a newbie lover to kiwi, so I'm especially looking forward to making the Freckled Kiwi!

The recipes in this post are thanks to Trestle on Tenth and the generous sharing heart of Vital Juice. Trestle on Tenth is a fabulous and affordable Swiss brasserie across from the beautiful Highline Park in NYC, with some pretty darn good reviews! If you are fortunate enough to live within a reasonable travel distance, stop by for some yummies, have the above from the Drinkable Garden menu made for you, and then walk it off in the picturesque Highline Park. If not, we can be ever so grateful to them and Vital Juice for sharing recipes with those in the land of far far away! Vital Juice is one of my favorite sites to follow, seems they have something for everyone, so check them out and sign up here if you are interested in receiving fun daily emails on beauty, wellness, fitness and nutrition. To my amigos reading this, I'm organizing a lil' trip to Trestle on Tenth soon, who's joining

Hope you enjoyed this share and thank you for checking it out! Til next time, and don't forget to shake your Yum Shaker's in the meanwhile!

My Journey Back into Greater Wellness This Year

Yesterday: I engaged in a real non-dance workout for the first time since I hurt myself at work last October

Today: My legs are so sore and I’m walking like a woman in a knee length pencil skirt made of steel! I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M THAT OUT OF SHAPE!

While I admit to never being a fitness freak or gym goer, I’ve always been generally active and don’t eat too much of anything for the most part except for chocolate and chicken, *tee hee*! I’ve danced regularly almost all of my life, rode my bike almost daily for many years, used workout DVD’s and have done toning and stretching exercises at home. In 2010 I worked out at home for 2 hours a day, 3-5 days a week, made fresh vegetable juices and fruit smoothies almost every day and followed what I call a moderate diet (I eat anything I want, just aim to do it in moderation). That actually was my best and most consistent year. Theeeeen, I started a new job. If trying to get used to a new schedule change wasn’t difficult enough, a lil’ accident at work resulted in constant tinnitus. There's absolutley NOTHING you can do about that as far as my research has offered so far. It took 3 weeks for the head and neck pain to chill out a bit, but waking up to loud ringing noises that switch levels throughout the day is not much of a motivator. I just dropped working out almost all together.

I really love to eat! This is after dancing for many hours on set for a music video.

Welcome 2012:

By the new year, I couldn’t take it anymore. I hadn’t been to a dance class in over a year since my move, hadn’t done a real workout since October, my healthy wonderful relationship with making fresh juices and smoothies had ended completely and I slowly started giving into the food that was available to me at work. ‘No bueno’ as my co-workers would say (heeey, is it because I'm Latina guys?#that-just-in-via-late-reaction). To top it off, I reached the maximum amount of depression I could bear (because we like to bear depression at all, right?). I then finally started using my Masala Bhangra DVD’s regularly. I had used Zumba primarily on DVD and mainly Belly Dance as exercise in the past, but decided that by the end of 2012 I would get certified in Masala Bhangra…teaching would be a surefire way for me to keep exercise in my life regularly, and a form of exercise that is unique to the area that I am currently living in. My Masala Bhangra workouts were working fabulously well for me and with only a month and a half into it I took a chance and signed up for the certification course with Mickela Mallozzi earlier than what I planned. After an exciting and exhausting weekend long training, I passed the practical, received my certification and became a proud Masala Bhangra-ist. I had every intention of making it into the city every other week to take lessons with the Queen (Sarina Jain) or Princess (Mickela Mallozi) of Masala Bhangra themselves so I could start teaching by summertime. Naturally, of course I hurt myself again at work during that week (it’s ok, you can laugh at my accident prone-ness) and this time worse. With my head and neck back in excruciating pain, I again lost all motivation to workout. Within a month I started trying again, and could only make it through a ½ hour of a workout before I couldn’t go any longer. I would say that would make my teacher worthy status loooooow. The image of me being the kind of teacher who can hardly breathe past the warm up and spending half a class massaging her neck was not-so-shnazzy. Unless of course I was going for the role of  comical Masala Bhangra Instructor (imagine Chelsea Handler as your instructor, who'd undoubtedly have a fun class but not lead to one meeting their fitness goals most likely: see her visit to an S-Factor class). I continued practicing at home to rebuild my strength and stamina until my family members started to complain that my dhol drumming dance aerobic endeavors were making the house a little too “masala” for them. They seriously thought my jumping around would make the TV that is nailed into the wall, fall off the wall and that the dancing would blow up the speakers. Seriously. All 140lbs of me dancing around can do all that. Would you believe me if I told you they weren’t dramatic? Anyways, that was more than enough for me to throw my hands up in the air and agree with the universe that this was clearly not meant to be at the time. The only problem is I went back into my unusual lifestyle that lacked physical fitness activities which didn’t help my depression and naturally it did not help the pain or my energy levels. Life without Masala Bhangra and belly dance is ALOT LESS FUN!

Dancing, especially belly dancing, has always been a multi-outlet for me and my favorite form of exercise. Here I am after a performance with my talented friend Elektra and Christina from Iron & Silk Fitness Center gym in NYC.

Getting properly introduced to Vemma:

At the end of March I was honored to be chosen as one of the 6 faces of Divas in the City. My friend Cynthia came out that night to support me and above the happy voices, music pumping and yummy food (sing it: “these are a few of my favorite things!”) Cynthia noticed the change in my usual demeanor. Living close to two hours away from most of my framily*, I hadn't really detailed anyone much on my “new” life since I moved away. Since it was my neck pain that threw a wrench in my swag that night, I filled Cynthia in on how that came to beb. She told me that she had something that she felt would help me and to give her a call during the week when I had time. I did, and that is when she told me about her experience with Vemma and how she came to sell it. Although I already knew that Cynthia was a brand partner to Vemma for quite some time, I had never asked her what it was exactly and she’s not the type to “force” sell a product. My response to her that night was that I trusted her so much that she could sell me a gum wrapper off of the floor. *Giggle, giggle* Also, considering the fact that Cynthia is a psychotherapist, life coach and COO of MujerPower, Inc., she is a chock full of knowledge in the many facets of well being. That topped with the reality that she is one of the most amazing friends I’ve had, it didn’t really matter to me if she had salesperson charm or not, I was sold on Vemma before she even gave me the details. I was going to give Vemma a shot because she breathed the word and that was that.

Enter my new crazy blond gym addict co-worker:

Aka, #wannabepersonaltrainer. At this point it was clear that it was going to take a little bit more than self motivation to get me back on track. I was in desperate need of outside motivation; a class, a focused exercise buddy...something! While waiting for other financial obligations to be taken care of, I still needed to do something productive for my health until (and after) I was able to make my Vemma purchase. Healthy habits needed to be re-developed ASAP! While chitating* with my friend, Turkish Warrior, about our plans to go to the beach and how we both wanted to start working out, the Dumbo ears of crazy blond gym addict co-worker/#wannabe(andgonnabe)personaltrainer flew up sky high. Her response to us went kind of like this: “Oh nice, I go to that beach every day after the gym, so I’ll probably see you there and we can work out on the beach.” Um, work out after a work out, on the Long Island “eeeew” Sound? All I thought was “This beatch is craaaaazy.” Either way, a new chapter began and those of you who know me most likely know how that particular beach work-out went. I’ll just save those details for my next post on this topic, but in the meanwhile rest assured that I am getting my work outs back into my life ;)

Thanks for reading, til next time!

Love,
Lisa xo

Sexy in Cotton, The Natural Beauty (Health Benefits of Cotton Panties)

Victoria's Secret 5 for $25 Cotton Panties

I know many ladies like to stick to the sexiest, silkiest, satiny-est and laciest panties we can find (I know, I have a whoooole draw dedicated to those!) but we shouldn’t fail to remember the health benefits of wearing cotton panties. While those “sexy” materials are absolutely fine and safe to wear, they don’t allow our intimate area to breath as well as cotton panties do.  The predecessor is great for those days that you need an extra boost of sexy, but the latter is a must to maintain proper vaginal health and what you should be wearing especially when engaging in physical activity. I wear cotton panties regularly to my dance classes, workouts and to sleep.

Cotton material panties prevent excess moisture from forming, alleviate itching, stop odors and prevent yeast infections which are sometimes a consequence of the cotton panty’s glammed up amigas Lace, Silk and Satin. Luckily, lingerie designers are catching on and more and more lingerie favorites are lined in cotton around the vaginal area which allows regular use to be healthier.

Cotton panties (the natural “just rolled out of bed without make-up” beauty) don’t have to be granny panties; you can get sexy laced trim ones just about anywhere that panties are sold! I got mine at Victoria’s Secret at 5 for $25 and the ones in the PINK section where actually sexier (what’s wrong with this picture, that is the teeny bopper section, smh).
